Spectacular Light Displays at Burj Khalifa

When there’s a nation to celebrate or an occasion to commemorate, you can almost always count on Burj Khalifa to light up and show solidarity. In recent years, we’ve seen the tallest structure in the world transform itself beautifully, so, in the same spirit that Burj Khalifa does it, let’s take a look back at some of its most memorable displays:

1. Jacinda Ardern for her empathy

In 2019, the word peace and an image of New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern were projected onto Burj Khalifa. This was to thank the leader for showing empathy towards the muslim community after the mass shooting in two Christchurch mosques.

2. Flag of New Zealand for Waitangi Day

Early this year, Burj Khalifa also had a light display of New Zealand’s flag to show their support on Waitangi Day.

3. Flag of Canada for Canada Day

To help celebrate Canada Day, Burj Khalifa bloomed in red and white in July of 2019. (The maple leaf was just nice to look at!)

4. Mahatma Gandhi for his 150th birth anniversary

On the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary, the Burj Khalifa lit up images of the founder of the modern nonviolence movement, as well as India’s flag.

5. Flag of Italy to show solidarity amid COVID-19 crisis

The words Siamo con voi (translates to “We are with you”) and the three colors of the Italian flag were displayed on Burj Khalifa in March 2020. This was “a sign of solidarity and friendship… in the common challenge to overcome [the coronavirus]”, according to Dubai Media Office.

6. Bugs Bunny for the Opening of Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi

Together with other Looney Tunes characters and DC heroes, Bugs Bunny was featured in the light show of Burj Khalifa in 2018. This was to celebrate the opening of the Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi.

7. Philippine Flag for Independence Day

To celebrate the Philippine’s day of Independence in 2019, Burj Khalifa lit up in red, blue, yellow, and white. Philippine Ambassador to the UAE also shared that Emaar, builder and developer of the Burj Khalifa, wanted to pay tribute to the Filipino people.

8. Adidas for the ‘Run For The Ocean’ fundraiser

To help promote the Run For The Ocean campaign that calls on people to run to help youth in Maldives learn about pollution, it projected its brand initiative on Burj Khalifa in 2019.

9. UK Flag to show support after Manchester attack in 2017

Less than a day after the world learned about the killing in Ariana Grande’s concert in Manchester, Burj Khalifa lit up to the colors of the Union Flag.
