COVID-19 Cases in Korea as of April 19, 2020
The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) records 8 new COVID-19 cases on April 19, the first time that the daily report falls below ten after two months. This adds to the total number of COVID-19 cases in South Korea, which is 10,661 as of publish time.
As per the latest tally of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, at least 8,000 have been declared cured and 2,385 are in quarantine. The number of deaths reported is 234.
However, KCDC believes that having a single-digit addition to the COVID-19 cases in Korea is not a cause to relax. They will continue monitoring for new infections, especially after the recently-concluded election.
The Korean government announced that it will extend its social distancing campaign through May 5. However, unlike the original high-level social distancing declaration, public venues such as churches, gyms, and clubs will no longer be forced to shut operations. This is to accommodate the public for the upcoming holidays on April 30th, May 1st, and May 5th.
Outdoor recreational facilities such as forests will also resume operations. Baseball games and other outdoor sports events will also be permitted, but spectators will not be allowed inside the stadiums.
The government is expected to update their social distancing guidelines after the two-week extension.
